MISCONCEPTIONS ABOUT STERILIZATION

Last week, 3 of our boys went for their sterilization. This week, it’s the girls’ turn! Yobie, Carie and Crystal did fantastic through their surgery and are now recuperating in the wonderland. In our earlier post, we shared tips on how to reduce the risks of sterilization. Today, we hope to debunk some misconceptions about sterilization and help you understand why sterilization is just so important!

1. STERILIZATION IS SO UNNATURAL!
Well, in the first place, domesticated rabbits are ‘man-made’. The au-naturale wild rabbits are meant to be food for predators. Mother nature gave them a powerful reproductive system to procreate and feed the world. They were never meant to live long and kept as pets! So it is wrong to assume their wild nature to breed is necessary in today’s context as domesticated pets. Especially when they are abused to multiply for monetary gain.

2. STERILIZATION IS DANGEROUS!
It is true that there are not many good rabbit doctors around. Not all vets are savvy which is why we are always remind rabbit owners to pick the right doctor! Passionate rabbit vets are hard to come by but we are thankful there are a selective few who have gained the experience and skills to provide accurate medical care for them. As a rabbit rescue group, we also work closely with them to improve our medical knowledge on rabbits.

3. IT WON’T MAKE A DIFFERENCE FOR MY LONE RABBIT
Oh no no no.. it will still make a whole lot of difference! The intent to sterilize is not just to prevent breeding but to ensure the health of the rabbit! An unsterilized rabbit is like a ‘sexually frustrated teenager’. All they have in their mind is to look for a breeding partner and their sexual urge will never calm down enough to truly enjoy your love. Both females and males risk contracting gynaecological/testicular diseases and the probability increases exponentially with age.

4. MY RABBIT WILL HATE ME!
They definitely won’t be happy because it is a painful surgery. But if you think about it logically, the sterilization process is definitely an improvement to their overall wellbeing. It removes their sexual frustration, calms their territorial nature, and improve their overall hygiene! In addition, a sterilized rabbit will also be more ready for a rabbit companion. When your precious boy falls in love with his bunny girlfriend, you will be sure that he will be the happiest rabbit in the world!
