Rabbit Savvy Veterinary Recommendation

Rabbits are considered ‘exotic’ pets and requires specialized veterinary care. Their herbivorous nature coupled with their sensitive prey instinct makes them very challenging animals to diagnose and treat.

As the majority of vets in Singapore are devoted to canine and feline medicine, it is important for rabbit owners To know who and where to seek accurate veterinary care when needed.

Here are some useful information to support owners in maintaining good medical health in our pet rabbits.

A ‘Well Bunny Visit’

Owners should bring their rabbits for a general well-being check up at least once a year (more regularly if sickly or senior). This way, the vet can see your rabbit when he is healthy and more abled to diagnose him when he is unwell.

A thorough ‘Well Bunny Visit’ shall include (but not limited to):

1. Medical history review
2. Discussion of existing/new medical condition
3. Physical examination of the head (eye, nose, ears), body (fur, skin), organs (heart and lungs via stethoscope, abdomen via palpation)
4. Dental examination via otoscope (incisors and molars)
5. laboratory testing which may include blood test, skin scrape, urinalysis and fecal analysis.

Rabbits are prey animals that hide diseases very well. Owners should be vigilant in understanding their rabbits in order not to be surprised with any sudden symptoms. Health problems detected early are often easier and less expensive to treat.

The duty of the emergency vet is to stabilize your rabbit’s condition until your usual rabbit-savvy vet is available. They can evaluate traumatic injuries, perform emergency procedures as well as conduct common diagnostic tests. However, they may not be as savvy with rabbits. It is recommended that arrange for a transfer to your usual rabbit-savvy vet clinic once they are open.
